Response to Cartography Research

After finding the map of the area I used to live in (actually multiple maps) I was exited to try and make something out of it. Having already make a small concertina book, I decided to make another but following the idea of layers. I wanted to create it so that when closed, you could see the layering up of separate peaks, peaks getting higher to the back.

After cutting the shape out, I was taken at how the left over section of paper creates such an aesthetic horizon. I will do something with this at another point.

The other side. Simple silhouettes to create texture and depth of mountains. Painted on with simple blocked shapes as the other side is full of details from the map.

Closer look at the map side and it's folds.

Finished concertina. I left the extra cut of paper on the right hand side as i experimented wiht cutting it off but it made the whole piece look too narrow. I have used collage throughout, using part of the map to add in words. Some words have each letter individually but out from the map to form a new word. I have also used stamps to draw attention to some words.

On the front I have made up the words "sortire en Bourg". This is something we used to say when I went to school in Bourg D'Oisans when we would refer to going into town after school (generally referring to bunking lessons and going into town).

Language could be something to consider further. There are unique words for things in mountain language, first off because there might be told or certain elements that only appear in the mountain but also because of different villages. When I spent time in the Italian Alpes, I became more aware of different dialects. I can understand Italian to some degree but when the locals where speaking it was a whole other story. I would say it's the equivalent of someone from Southern England, compared with someone from Glasgow. Some different words, abbreviations, slang and accent all playing a part.

Detail of the layered pages. Using a similar part of the ma to cut and paste Glacier onto the simpler side of the concertina.
