Proposal Feedback and Action
I have just had my feedback for my Proposal on my project. Some helpful advice however it has been subjected that I create a series of artist books and I'm not convinced that this is where I want to go. The reason for this being that I'm actually not that interested in artist book. I enjoy making them but there are other areas I enjoy more and although I love books, I have never found an artist book I find that engaging. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I am also not particularly interested in working within artist books after this course. However, depending on what I make, I understand that it might still benefit my portfolio.
I have been advised to look at other travel and visual journals, perhaps I can use the ones I have? As well as researching authorial illustration. To start this off I'm going to have a quick look on the internet as I'm not sure what this means. I found this written by Atlantic Press:
"The Authorial Illustrator seeks to reassert illustration as a developing practice; working against the tendency for the discipline of illustration to be seen as a repetitive commodity where the illustrator is presented with an already clearly defined concept."
I think this sort of defines the way I like to work. I have requested the book in the link above to the Library as it seems like it would be very relevant to me and other illustrators on the course.
So I move away and look a little more into travel and visual journals. I have looked at previously the journals of Pat Perry. They differ from the way I work but I think they are amazing, their mark making brings across a lot of feeling and although he often sketches in a certain way, he occasionally deviates by using other material and adding colour. You can tell that he often just uses what ever pen or pencil he has in his pocket or bag at the time.
I have been advised to look at the works of Ronald Searle and Fabrice Moireau.
